The Rokeby Venus is a painting by the Spanish Golden Age artist Diego Velazquez, completed between 1647 and 1651. It depicts the Roman goddess Venus lying on a bed with her back to the viewer, gazing into a mirror held up by her son Cupid. The painting is one of the few surviving female nudes from Spanish art of this period, a genre the Spanish Inquisition generally suppressed, and its sensual pose and use of a mirror to show Venus reflected face were unusual choices for the time. It takes its common name from Rokeby Park in Yorkshire, England, where it was once displayed, and it now hangs in the National Gallery in London.
