Self-Portrait with Palette is an oil painting made in 1878 and 1879 by the French painter Edouard Manet, one of only two self-portraits he produced. It shows Manet half-length in formal Parisian dress, a black top hat, brown jacket and white shirt with a black silk tie, holding a paint-loaded brush in one hand and his palette and further brushes in the other, looking directly at the viewer against a dark ground. The composition draws on Diego Velazquez's Las Meninas, in particular Velazquez's own self-portrait within that painting, but Manet makes himself the sole subject rather than a background figure. The painting was sold at auction in 2010 for 29.48 million dollars, at the time a record price for a work by Manet.
