The Absinthe Drinker (Manet)

The Absinthe Drinker is an oil-on-canvas painting by the French painter Edouard Manet, made around 1859 and regarded as his first major, fully original work. It is a full-length portrait, 180.5 by 105.6 centimeters, of a Paris rag-picker named Collardet who frequented the streets around the Louvre, shown in a black top hat and brown cloak, leaning against a ledge with an empty bottle at his feet; Manet later added a glass of absinthe to the composition. Painted in muted browns, greys and blacks and drawing on Gustave Courbet's realism, Diego Velazquez's portrayals of ordinary people, and the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, the painting elevated a disreputable, everyday subject to the scale and dignity of history painting.
