The Watzmann

An oil painting by the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, painted 1824 to 1825, depicting the Watzmann mountain as seen from Berchtesgaden looking northeast. It hangs today in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The painting has a documented Nazi-era provenance: the Jewish collector Martin Brunn was forced to sell it in 1937 to help fund his family's escape from Germany, with Adolf Hitler personally contributing 10,000 reichsmarks toward the purchase; a 2002 restitution settlement let DekaBank acquire the painting from Brunn's heirs and return it to the museum on long-term loan.
