Two Monkeys (Bruegel)

Genre Scenes

Two Monkeys is a small oil on oak panel painting made in 1562 by the Netherlandish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, showing two monkeys chained to an iron ring beneath a stone archway, with the city of Antwerp visible through the opening beyond them. Measuring only about 23 by 20 centimetres, the painting is read as an allegory of human folly, the two figures traditionally interpreted as personifying avarice and extravagance, chained by their own vices rather than by any outside force. It is held today in the Gemaldegalerie of the Berlin State Museums.
