Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, popularly known as Whistler's Mother, is an oil-on-canvas painting made in 1871 by the American-born painter James McNeill Whistler, depicting his mother Anna McNeill Whistler seated in profile. Measuring about 144.3 by 162.4 centimetres and displayed in a frame of Whistler's own design, it was bought by the French state in 1891 and is held by the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. It is one of the most famous works by an American artist shown outside the United States, and has been described as an American icon and a Victorian Mona Lisa.
