Amedeo Modigliani

Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in Paris from 1906 onward, where he became part of the circle of the Ecole de Paris alongside artists such as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brancusi. He is best known for portraits and nudes rendered in a distinctive modernist style marked by elongated faces, necks, and figures, seen in works such as Nu couche and Jeanne Hebuterne in a Red Shawl. Modigliani's work was poorly received during his lifetime, and he managed only a single solo exhibition before his early death, but his paintings later became highly sought after, and he is today counted among the most valuable, and most frequently forged, artists in the world.
