Antonio Gherardi

Antonio Gherardi, known as Il Reatino, was an Italian Baroque painter, architect and stuccoist born in Rieti in 1638 and active mainly there and in Rome, where he died in 1702. Moving to Rome around 1656 under the patronage of Monsignor Bulgarini, he trained with Pier Francesco Mola and Pietro da Cortona and developed a dual practice in painting and stucco decoration influenced by Bernini and Borromini. Admitted to the Accademia di San Luca in 1674, he became known for architecturally inventive chapel designs, including the Santa Cecilia Chapel and the Avila Chapel, alongside a wider body of frescoes and altarpieces across Roman and Reatine churches.
