David Alfaro Siqueiros was a Mexican painter, political activist, and one of the founding figures of the Mexican muralist movement, known for dynamic, dramatically foreshortened compositions and for experimenting with industrial materials such as spray guns, synthetic paints, and pyroxylin lacquers to give his murals a bold, mechanized visual energy. A committed communist who took part in armed political conflict, including an attempted assassination of Leon Trotsky, Siqueiros used his murals, such as Portrait of the Bourgeoisie in Mexico City, to advance explicitly revolutionary and anti-fascist political messages. His technical experimentation with new materials and working methods also influenced later artists, including the young Jackson Pollock, who studied briefly in his experimental workshop in New York.
