Enguerrand Quarton

Enguerrand Quarton, also spelled Charonton (c. 1410 to c. 1466), was a French painter and manuscript illuminator whose few surviving works are among the first masterpieces of a distinctively French style, different from both Italian and Early Netherlandish painting. Only two of his six documented paintings survive, the Coronation of the Virgin and The Virgin of Mercy, and the Louvre now follows most art historians in attributing to him the famous Avignon Pieta as well.
