Francesco Solimena was a prolific Italian Baroque painter who lived from 4 October 1657 to 3 April 1747 and came from an established family of painters and draughtsmen. In his early years he was influenced above all by Luca Giordano and Mattia Preti and developed a highly personal and dramatic handling of light and shade, while his later art shows a tendency toward a more restrained classicism. He had many pupils and is regarded as one of the strongest influences on Neapolitan painting of the early eighteenth century.
