Garcia Fernandes

Garcia Fernandes was a Portuguese Renaissance painter who trained in the Lisbon workshop of Jorge Afonso, court painter to King Manuel I. During the 1530s he worked extensively in Coimbra on religious commissions for monasteries, and in 1533 and 1534 he collaborated with Cristovao de Figueiredo and Gregorio Lopes on altarpiece projects near Lamego. Later in his career he produced significant works in Lisbon, including paintings for the cathedral and the Trindade Convent, along with commissions for Old Goa in Portuguese India. He married in 1518, fathered at least nine children, and died around 1565; his work survives in Portuguese churches, monasteries and museums, including the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon and the Machado de Castro Museum in Coimbra.
