Jan Miel

Painters

Jan Miel was a Flemish painter and engraver, active from 1599 until his death in April 1664, who spent much of his career in Italy. In Rome he was part of the Bamboccianti, a circle of Dutch and Flemish artists who painted everyday scenes of the city's working people, before moving toward historical and religious subjects in a more classicizing style. In 1648 he became the first northern artist admitted to Rome's Accademia di San Luca, and he often collaborated with other painters, notably Alessandro Salucci, contributing the figures to Salucci's architectural views. From 1658 he served as court painter to Charles Emanuel II, Duke of Savoy, working in Turin until his death.
