Joan Miro was a Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramicist whose distinctive visual language of biomorphic shapes and flattened picture planes made him a central figure of twentieth-century modernism. Associated with Surrealism, and once called by Andre Breton the most Surrealist of us all, Miro nonetheless resisted formal membership in any movement and drew heavily on what he described as an interest in the unconscious and the childlike. Major works such as The Farm, The Tilled Field, and the Constellations series span a career that also produced sculpture, murals, and more than 250 illustrated books, establishing a body of work prized for its playful, symbol-rich abstraction.
