The Farm (Miro)

Landscapes and Still Lifes

The Farm is an oil on canvas painting by Joan Miro, made between 1921 and 1922 and held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It catalogues, in meticulous detail, the animals, plants, farm objects and buildings of Miro family farmhouse, called a masia, at Mont-roig del Camp in Catalonia. Miro spent nine months on the canvas, and later called it a summary of one period of his work and the point of departure for what followed, marking the peak of what is often called his detailist period before he moved toward surrealism. The writer Ernest Hemingway bought the painting for five thousand French francs, and his widow Mary Hemingway donated it to the National Gallery in 1987.
