Ludovico Carracci was an Italian early Baroque painter, etcher and printmaker from Bologna. His works are marked by a strong mood created through broad gestures and flickering light that evokes spiritual emotion, and he is credited with helping reinvigorate Italian art, especially fresco painting, after it had become subsumed by formalistic Mannerism. He died in Bologna in 1619.
