Tintoretto, born Jacopo Robusti, was an Italian painter of the Venetian school active from 1518 to 1594, working in the Mannerist style that bridged the Renaissance and the Baroque. Nicknamed il Furioso for the speed and energy of his brushwork, he aimed to combine what he called Michelangelo's drawing and Titian's color, producing muscular figures, dramatic gestures and bold perspective. His Paradise, painted for the Doge's Palace and measuring roughly 9.1 by 22.6 metres, was considered the largest painting ever done on canvas in its time.
