Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch painter and printmaker of the seventeenth century, celebrated for his psychologically penetrating portraits, his mastery of light and shadow, and an unflinching series of self-portraits painted across his entire working life. Trained in Leiden and active for most of his career in Amsterdam, he worked at the height of the Dutch Golden Age, producing altarpieces, biblical and mythological scenes, and portraits of the Amsterdam merchant class alongside etchings that remain foundational to the print medium.
