Annunciation (Fra Angelico, San Marco)

This Annunciation is an Early Renaissance fresco painted by Fra Angelico around 1440 to 1445 in the Convent of San Marco in Florence, one of roughly fifty frescoes Cosimo de' Medici commissioned Fra Angelico and his workshop to paint through the rebuilt convent's cells, cloister, chapter house and corridors. It shows the angel Gabriel approaching the Virgin Mary in an open cloister setting rather than the enclosed interior traditional in earlier Gothic versions of the scene, and it is considered the most celebrated of Fra Angelico's San Marco frescoes for its handling of space and light.
