Castelfranco Madonna

The Castelfranco Madonna is an oil on panel painting by Giorgione, made around 1503 to 1504 and held in a side chapel of the Duomo of Castelfranco Veneto in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It shows the Madonna and Child enthroned between Saint Francis and Saint Nicasius in the sacra conversazione format, with the Virgin's throne set unusually high, giving the composition a distinctive vertical structure unlike comparable works by Giovanni Bellini and other Renaissance painters of the period. It is one of only three paintings that can be firmly attributed to Giorgione, and it exemplifies his innovative technique of pittura senza disegno, painting directly without preliminary drawing, which helped transform Venetian painting.
