A multi-paneled altarpiece painted by the German artist Matthias Grünewald between 1512 and 1516 for the Monastery of St. Anthony in Isenheim, whose hospital treated patients suffering from ergotism and skin disease. Its harrowing Crucifixion panel, painted with unflinching physical detail, is regarded as one of the most powerful religious images of Northern Renaissance art.
