Saint George and the Dragon (Raphael)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Saint George and the Dragon is a small oil on wood cabinet painting by the Italian High Renaissance painter Raphael, made around 1505 and measuring about 28.5 by 21.5 centimeters. It depicts the legendary combat of Saint George against a dragon, combining themes of chivalry and Christian faith; the saint is shown wearing a blue garter identifying him with the English Order of the Garter. The work was likely commissioned by Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, who received the Order of the Garter from King Henry VII of England in 1504, and may have been intended as a gift to the English king or his emissary. It is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
